HEAVY CHALLENGES: THE CASE OF BOLHÃO MARKET

Bolhão Market
Much more than a place of commerce, Bolhão Market already has the status of an entity in Oporto and in Portugal.
With a history that goes back to the 19th century, this is one of the most emblematic locations in the city and it’s classified as a building of patrimonial interest for its architectural, artistic, cultural, and social value.
In 2022, after over 4 years of being closed for a deep requalification, it reopened its doors with a renewed space, more modern and more adequate to the current needs of both the tradespeople and visitors. It counts with 38 stores and 10 restaurants, as well as 81 stalls, where it’s possible to find a bit of everything: fresh produces, natural products, handmade articles, among others.
What was the challenge?
When Bolhão Market was still under construction, it was launched a public contest to give all the stalls and stores the equipment needed for its functioning – since the fridges to the scales.
Fribarco, partner of Europesagem, the official distributor of Balanças Marques in Portugal, applied with a proposition that included our BM5 commercial scales.
Even though our weighing equipment presents features that went beyond the requirements of the contest, the team responsible for the project wanted to know more about our solutions.
After studying them and seeing them working in person, they decided that our scales would be the ideal option for Bolhão, specially after a few adaptations that they asked for a better framing in the designed space.
What was the solution we presented?
Faced with the interest shown on our scales by the team responsible for the project of the new Bolhão Market, we developed a few changes at their request.
As they wanted, for this project, the behind screen of our BM5 ARM Suspension was changed to a smaller graphic display to reduce its visual impact on the environment idealized by the architect Nuno Valentim. Besides, the energy cable also went to the interior of the equipment to, once more, minimize the visual noise.
With these slight changes, our solutions of commercial weighing filled the requirements of the project. Today there are more than 60 scales, in the BM5 ARM Suspension and BM5 Junior Double Body models, equipping the stalls of the fishmongers, butcheries, and fruits shops in the renewed Bolhão.
